Welcome!

Welcome to the On The Bit Jockey Club! Established in 2017, the OJC provides your all-access pass to the sport of kings. Not only do we focus on the success of your current racers, but we also strive to educate people on aftercare for off-the-track Thoroughbreds (OTTB). Through the OJC's dedication to consistent action, fast-paced races, and well-deserved awards, we strive to maintain a positive community for race enthusiasts of all levels!

Membership

Looking to join the OJC? We're thrilled to have you!

Membership is $2,500 per owner for the year and is due upon membership renewal or registration. Membership after July 1st is $1,250. This fee should be sent to the Jockey Club. Registration should be done via the OJC Spreadsheet. Editing is turned on for the Registered and Members tabs, except for certain cells. Please add your horse's information to the Registered tab and your name to the Members tab. When adding horses to the Registered tab, please only include sire, dam, and breeder if the horse is gamebred. If your horse is created, please leave the x in the cell. Questions about membership and registration can be directed to Shanny via the forum.

Racing Profile

The racing profiles used at the OJC are based on the real life Dosage Index. These numbers are recorded when you register your horse (2yos are allowed 8 points, 3yo and up are allowed 12 points), and are used as part of the calculations to determine how your horse performs under certain conditions. Since you can allocate your horse's points however you wish upon registration, it's important to understand what these numbers mean. For example, a Triple Crown prospect will have most of their points assigned to the Intermediate and Classic categories. Think of the DI as a scale that moves from sprint to endurance. Most horses in OTB will sit around Intermediate and Classic, but you can always concentrate your points there, and assign leftover points to the other categories e.g. for a 3yo (12 points): 1-4-5-1-1 & for a 2yo (8 points): 1-2-3-1-1.

Every year a horse's racing profile may be changed after January 1st, and new 3yos are allowed an additional 4 points (total of 12). Additionally, you may change a horse's surface preference (Dirt, Turf) once per quarter, although it requires an appointment with a Flat Racing Trainer.

Racing

The OJC schedule is packed full of fun and opportunities to advance towards your dreams and goals. Although subject to change, you may view the full schedule here. If you are interested in hosting one of the scheduled OJC race days, please PM Shanny. If you are interested in hosting your own race day, comment on any of the open dates and contact Shanny to discuss any questions you may have, as well as go over the randomizer.

Level Advancement

Newly created/bred/retrained horses may begin in Maiden or Allowance. Allowance is always open to ALL grades. Horses may move freely between levels assuming they qualify for the race they are entering, e.g. racing a Grade 2 horse in a Grade 3 is acceptable.

Level Requirements
Maiden ≥ 2 years old
Never won a race.
Allowance ≥ 2 years old
Open to all grades.
Grade 3 ≥ 2 years old
At least 1 Allowance win.
Grade 2 ≥ 2 years old
At least 2 G3 wins.
Grade 1 ≥ 2 years old
At least 2 G2 wins.

Point Accrual

Points are tracked based on age (2, 3, Older), sex (Male, Female), surface (Dirt, Turf), and distance (Sprint). Points are awarded for each qualifying category, e.g. a 3yo Filly finishing 1st in a 5f Turf race would receive 4 points in the 3yo category, 4 points in the Female category, 4 points in the Sprint category, and 4 points in the Turf category. Points are not awarded to 2yos for the Sprint category, as most 2yo races are considered Sprints. Further, points are used to determine quarterly awards, as well as assist in Eclipse Awards at the end of the year. 2024 awards can be seen here.

Level Win Place Show 4th
Maiden 4 2 1 -
Allowance 6 4 2 1
Grade 3 8 6 4 2
Grade 2 10 8 6 4
Grade 1 12 10 8 6
Special Races 15 13 11 9

Randomizer

In 2017, Bette created a stat-based spreadsheet randomizer to encourage life-like competition and results. This amazing feat is explained below!

How It Works

Rather than generate a random number and assign placements based on this (like the randomizers we are used to), the OJC randomizer is specific calculations - with a little luck! Bette's stat-based randomizer weighs the following factors:
35% luck (randomly assigned)
40% suitability (based on racing profile)
10% class (race grade)
10% surface (dirt/turf)
5% track condition (fast/good/muddy/sloppy)

The Calculations

Your horse has its best chance of running under ideal conditions, e.g. running in an 8f dirt race and hoping the track is fast on raceday for a horse with points concentrated in Intermediate, who prefers fast dirt tracks. However, the randomizer takes into consideration if you happen to just wing an entry by calculating solely luck and class. The overall gist of the formula is:

Luck + Class - Suitability - Surface - Condition
Weighted: 0.35*Luck + 0.1*Class - 0.4*Suitability - 0.1*Surface - 0.05*Condition

The logistics of this are explained below:
Luck = RAND() x 10 > This makes it a whole number, which just simplifies how the scores appear.

Class = Class is a pre-determined value of 1 to 5 -- maiden (1), allowance (2), G3 (3), G2 (4), G1 (5). If all horses in the race are at the same class level, this factor is a wash.

Suitability = ABS([Race CD Value] - [Horse CD]). If your horse is ideally suited to the race length, the value is 0. It's absolute value since the values go from +2 to -2, so it won't get wonky dealing with the negatives.

The race length is converted to its equivalent dosage center of distribution (CD) value (e.g. 6 furlongs = 1.5, 10 furlongs = 0.5, 12 furlongs = 0). The horse's is calculated from their profile using the dosage equation for CD.

Surface = ABS([Surface Value] - [Horse Surface Value]). Surface value is either 1 = dirt or 2 = turf. If your horse is ideally suited to the surface, the value is 0.

Condition = ABS([Condition Value] - [Horse Condition Value]). The condition value is randomly generated for the entire race day, based on the RL race card from that day. Values are 1 = fast, 2 = good, 3 = muddy, 4 = sloppy. If your horse is ideally suited to the track condition, the value is 0.

OTTBs

Off the Track Thoroughbreds (OTTBs) make for amazing sporthorses, and the OJC is proud to honor these beautiful competitors. Known as the OJC Thoroughbred Makeover, special challenges and shows for OTTBs and their owners run from January to June, with awards after the final show. The top horse in each discipline will be recognized, with game-wide voting available for Fan Favorite / Game's Choice.

Additionally, the OJC will recognize OTTBs at the end of the year when yearly awards are posted. Special awards will be given out based on the leaderboards provided by the various disciplines in OTB.

Stud Book

To register with the OJC Stud Book, please PM Shanny with your stallion's name, YOB, color, stud fee, and your barn name. Optional: 200x200px photo, barn URL and stallion's personal page URL. It costs $1,000 per stallion per year to register with the OJC Stud Book. All Thoroughbred sires, OTTB or simply racehorse-producers, are welcome to join. There will be a 10% points bonus added to quarterly awards and Eclipse Awards totals for all leading sires registered with the OJC Stud Book.
